Breakthroughs in drug discovery, scientific research acceleration, and operational efficiency dominate headlines. Yet beneath this triumphalist framing lies a constellation of serious harms that receive minimal public attention: an environmental catastrophe unfolding in real-time, systematic intellectual property theft, algorithmic discrimination baked into critical infrastructure, labor exploitation indistinguishable from modern slavery, mass surveillance that dismantles privacy rights, and a mental health crisis directly traceable to AI-driven systems. These problems are not marginal—they are foundational to how contemporary AI systems actually work.
